Canada never built a rocket of its own. That one thing became robotics. The original Canadarm rode the back of the Space Shuttle for thirty years, deploying satellites, helping assemble the ISS, and at one grim point inspecting the shuttle's own heat shield for the kind of damage that had already killed a crew. Canadarm2 and Dextre moved onto the station itself. Artemis is the same bargain, scaled to the Moon. Canada was the first nation to sign on to the Lunar Gateway, NASA's planned outpost in lunar orbit, and the price of entry was Canadarm3 - a smarter, self-repairing arm being built in Ontario for about a billion dollars. In return, Canada was promised two flights to the Moon, and Hansen's was the first.
Except the ground moved under the deal almost as it paid out. Days before Hansen launched, NASA announced it was pausing Gateway - the very station Canadarm3 was designed to live on - to put its money into getting hardware down onto the lunar surface instead. The arm is suddenly a tool without a confirmed home, one its builder insists can be repurposed for somewhere else on the Moon, and Canada's promised second astronaut seat now hangs on how the rewrite settles. The company behind all of it, MDA Space, has grown into a real commercial force, building satellites, the arms, and much of Telesat's Lightspeed broadband constellation. And for the first time, Canadian firms are trying to do the thing the country spent sixty years choosing not to, launching a rocket to orbit from Canadian soil, off a new spaceport on the Nova Scotia coast.
Hansen is home now, the first of a promised two Canadians bound for the Moon, even if the second has quietly grown a question mark. Canadarm3 is still being built, looking for the place it will end up working. It is a small agency's entire philosophy folded into one machine: you may not own the rocket, but if you build the single tool the mission cannot manage without, they will always keep a seat for you - usually.
